Oyster luggers on Bayou St. John, from a 1917 postcard
Happy St. John’s Eve! Tonight’s a big night for voodoo practitioners, as they celebrate Midsummer. Read more about it in my latest column for GoNOLA.com. The painting above was done later than the “voodoo rites” held on the bayou’s banks by Marie Laveau. By 1917, Bayou St. John was much more developed, and voodoo priests/priestesses went further out, or more “underground.”
Have a great Monday!
