Celebrating the Centennial of the storming of the Bastille, in New Orleans, 1889. From The American Architect and Building News (13 July 1889).

From the 1880s through the 1940s, many events, conventions, and milestone celebrations were celebrated on Canal Street with the construction of an arch fixture such as this. These days, NORTA would no doubt freak about a temporary, Papier-mâché structure, looming over their streetcars. Pity, they did liven things up.

Notice the four-track main line in the drawing. That configuration lasted until 1957. The streetcars at this time would have been mule-drawn, Johnson “bobtails.”
